Tone Policing: Time to Stop Being Polite to Men
Tone policing is one of the most pervasive examples of male privilege and systemic misogyny in society today. Why are assertive women called bossy and shamed for their tones when assertive men are promoted? Why is society obsessed with being “ladylike” or polite as a way to censor women, especially women of color, and anyone who’s femme-presenting? Even more insidious is the self-tone policing, when women apologize unnecessarily, are polite to men who don’t deserve it, and judge themselves for ridiculous reasons. Adam and Sarah spend this episode talking about why it’s time to stop being polite to men, stop apologizing, and stop tone policing.
Also this week, we read a listener email who talks about a shitty man and her experience with the Facebook Group “Are We Dating The Same Man?” And of course, our Seattle meetup is coming up soon! Please join us and RSVP!
